Michigan Aynoka Project (MAP)
Nonprofit, Urban Farming, Gardening & Ecological Education Center in Lansing, Michigan
Michigan Aynoka Project (MAP) is a Lansing 501 (C) (3) nonprofit focused on food sovereignty and urban agroecological education and praxis. We are a group of Eastside Lansing residents passionate about food equity and urban farming. Among our goals are:
collaborating with Capital Area communities to create & transmit urban agroecology + urban agroforestry practices and knowledge through an engaged urban farming project
addressing food sovereignty and food scarcity issues in Lansing's underserved communities (with an emphasis on Latinx communities, although all are welcome) and fostering an environment of reciprocal education and knowledge creation between MAP, our supporters, interlocutors, and collaborators
To that end, MAP is also an active citizen science research project. We are in the process of integrating perennial woody plants that are native to the Great Lakes region into an urban agricultural setting. The concept is to produce food that relies on the ecosystem services provided by Native plants, pollinators, and other ecological allies (birds, bugs, beetles, etc.).
Our locations
We have been developing and landscaping our small flagship urban community garden on 521 South Hayford St. in the Eastside neighborhood of Lansing. We are actively negotiating to add more gardening space to the project for the 2025 growing season. We anticipate being open and operational for community garden work and education programming in the spring of 2025.
